Known by the masses as a leader in the movement of above-the-lip surfing, Maui’s Dusty Payne has earned recognition for logging mind-blowing video parts that are changing’s the sport as we know it. In addition to establishing himself as a progressive free-surfing freak, Payne has proven himself to be equally as impressive in a singlet by surviving the deadly chop from 45 to 32 on his rookie year on the elite ranks before guaranteeing he’ll be back for more in 2011 with a miraculous last-second victory in a pressure-cooker of a heat over Mick Fanning at the Billabong Pipe Masters.
Payne’s qualification for the ASP World Tour marked him as the first Maui surfer ever to do so and being born-and-raised at the world-class pointbreak of Honolua Bay have made Payne especially lethal in righthand pointbreaks. Although the young Hawaiian native has established himself as one of the world’s most progressive athletes, Payne was diagnosed with diabetes before the beginning of his rookie year.
